Question · Creative Strategy

What does a creative agency do?

A creative agency develops the creative platform (the ideas, positioning, visual system, and narrative) that a brand uses across advertising, content, and product marketing. Some focus on brand identity (logo, visual system, brand book), some on advertising (campaign concepts, video, print, digital), some on integrated storytelling. The line between "creative agency" and "advertising agency" has blurred; most sell both.

What the firms actually sell

1,185 US listings in The Wall are filed under Creative Strategy, the largest discipline in the index. Looking at the service field instead, 505 firms name branding, and the lines beside it show the actual scope: 198 also list advertising, 191 list web design and 112 list marketing strategy.

The pattern is identity work plus the surfaces that identity lands on. That is why creative engagements price differently from performance work: the deliverable is a system that other people then execute against, rather than a campaign that reports weekly.

The money follows that shape. 352 of the 1,051 Creative Strategy listings that publish a minimum project size require $25,000 or more. Identity work is bought as a project with a real floor, which is why creative quotes and performance quotes are hard to compare side by side.

How to use this

Separate the identity project from the rollout before you budget. Firms that do both will quote both, and the rollout is usually the larger number and the one that slips.

How this was computed. Every figure on this page is counted from The Wall's own directory of approved, US-headquartered, machine-verified-live listings: 3,460 of them in the snapshot captured 2026-09-14. Rates, minimum project sizes, team sizes, founding years and ratings are provider-declared figures published on public profiles. 1,738 of those listings publish a service list, and that field holds at most 4 services per firm, so service counts are counts of what firms name first rather than everything they sell. Percentages of disclosed values exclude listings that publish no figure. Nothing here is modeled or estimated. Sourcing standards: editorial policy.

Why this matters

Google puts this question in People Also Ask for the "creative agency" query, which means buyers are asking it while they shop. The Wall answers it from the directory position: we index 3,460 verified US growth-services vendors across 10 pillars, so the figures above come from those records rather than from a survey.

If you are evaluating vendors in this category, the Creative Strategy pillar page carries the full US firm list with rate, team size and headquarters filters.
