BRIEFING

By Census region, the West holds a third of US growth vendors and the Midwest 15%

Headquarters data grouped into the four US Census regions shows 918 of 2,761 located vendors in the West and 414 in the Midwest. California by itself holds more than the entire 12-state Midwest.

The Wall has already mapped the index by top state and by metro, and tracked the New York and California race. Group the same headquarters data into the four US Census regions and a cleaner supply-side picture shows up. Of the 3,460 listings in the latest snapshot, 2,761 carry a headquarters state. Sorted by region, the West holds the most located vendors and the Midwest holds the fewest, by a wide margin.

The West and the South together hold 1,697 located vendors, 61.5% of the supply that reports a headquarters. Two of the four regions also lean on a single state. California's 520 listings are 57% of the West, and New York's 395 are 61% of the Northeast. Strip those two states out and both regions fall toward the middle of the table.

The Midwest is the figure that should stop a buyer. Twelve states and a business base that rivals any region in the country, and the region still shows only 414 listings, the smallest of the four at 15.0% of the located total. Illinois carries 158 of them, 38% of the region and almost three times Ohio, the next Midwest state at 57. California by itself holds more growth vendors than the entire Midwest, and the whole region sits just 19 listings ahead of New York State alone.

Headquarters marks where a firm is based. It says nothing about where the firm will work, and almost every listing in the index sells nationally. A Midwest buyer who shortlists only local vendors is filtering out 85% of the located market for no operational reason, and a West Coast buyer is choosing from a third of it before the first call. The rankings behind these regional totals sit in the state briefing and the city briefing.

One sourcing note. Regions follow the US Census Bureau's four-region definition, which groups the District of Columbia with the South, so the South counts 17 jurisdictions against 50 states plus DC across the four regions. 699 of the 3,460 listings publish no headquarters state and are excluded from the regional shares above.

How this was computed. Figures are computed from The Wall's index of approved, US-based, machine-verified-live listings, using the index snapshot current when each briefing was published: 2,286 listings at launch (August 3, 2026) and 3,460 in the latest snapshot (captured August 9, 2026). Engagement data (rates, minimum project sizes, team sizes, founding years, ratings) are provider-declared figures published on public Clutch profiles; they were present for 1,738 of the 2,286 launch listings, and coverage counts for later snapshots are stated inside each briefing that uses them. Percentages of "disclosed" values exclude listings that publish no figure. Nothing in this briefing is estimated or modeled. Sourcing standards: editorial policy.
