The typical vendor domain is 10 characters long, and only 133 of 3,461 run to 20 or more
Half of the domains in The Wall's index carry a name of 10 characters or fewer. Just 3.8% stretch to 20 characters, and the longest runs 31.
The Wall's August 9 snapshot records 3,461 domain strings. Measured on the name itself, the text before the first dot, the median is 10 characters and the mean is 11.0. Short names dominate. 311 domains, 9.0% of the index, use a name of five characters or fewer, and 133 domains, 3.8%, use a name of 20 or more.
How long vendor domain names run
| Name length | Domains | Share of index |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 5 characters | 311 | 9.0% |
| 6 to 8 characters | 774 | 22.4% |
| 9 to 11 characters | 915 | 26.4% |
| 12 to 15 characters | 941 | 27.2% |
| 16 to 20 characters | 439 | 12.7% |
| 21 or more characters | 81 | 2.3% |
| All domains | 3,461 | 100.0% |
The middle of the market sits between 6 and 15 characters. That range holds 2,630 domains, 76.0% of the index. Exactly 318 domains, 9.2%, land on 10 characters, the single most common length.
The short end is small but real. 167 domains use a name of four characters or fewer, including x.ai, c3.ai, and g2.com. The long end reads like a description. 17 domains use a name of 25 characters or more, among them thepartnershipscollective.com, industrialstrengthmarketing.com, and reputationmanagementconsultants.com, which is the longest at 31. A firm at that length is spelling out what it sells, a habit covered in the descriptive-name briefing.
The Wall's index does not record why a founder picked a name, so the read on the two ends is interpretation, not data. Short names are scarce because the best short .com names were taken years ago, and the ones that remain often sit on newer suffixes such as .ai. Long names are a search bet: the firm puts its service and often its city in the address itself. For a buyer, length says nothing about quality. It says how the firm chose to be found.
One sourcing note. Lengths are computed against the first label of each domain string in the August 9 snapshot, which holds 3,461 domain records against a 3,460-listing total, a one-record variance carried through from the capture. Hyphens count toward length. Suffix and digit analysis of the same domain set are covered in the top-level-domain briefing and the digit briefing.
How this was computed. Figures are computed from The Wall's index of approved, US-based, machine-verified-live listings, using the index snapshot current when each briefing was published: 2,286 listings at launch (August 3, 2026) and 3,460 in the latest snapshot (captured August 9, 2026). Engagement data (rates, minimum project sizes, team sizes, founding years, ratings) are provider-declared figures published on public Clutch profiles; they were present for 1,517 of the 2,286 launch listings (corrected November 7, 2026: earlier versions counted 221 records whose figures did not come from Clutch, and briefings that used them carry correction notes), and coverage counts for later snapshots are stated inside each briefing that uses them. Percentages of "disclosed" values exclude listings that publish no figure. Nothing in this briefing is estimated or modeled. Sourcing standards: editorial policy.
